Earlier this year a new haematology podcast was launched which has already been shortlisted for the Technology and Data in Nursing category for the Nursing Times Awards 2019.
'Bolus: education delivered stat' has been developed for nurses, junior doctors and allied health professionals, and has proved extremely popular already with a large, global listener base. The podcast was developed by three UCLH Haematology nurses, Sonia Thomas and Sarah Jordan, both ward sisters, and Gavin Cooper, a nurse educator.
The podcast was developed after a survey revealed a shared ambition for improved education, with a novel editorial style involving the interviewing of clinical staff. The idea was to provide a wider context to the haematology patient's journey, and to provide an alternative method of education than of traditional ward teaching sessions. Shift patterns and ward acuity had been identified as a barrier to reaching a significant number of staff at a time.
The survey of nursing staff across five wards showed that 80% indicated they would appreciate a podcast, and that with such an abundance of medical expertise available it was decided that this mobile method - available to anyone at any time - was an ideal way to provide educational insight from senior clinicians in an accessible and engaging format.
After a short pilot episode proved successful, a further nine episodes were recorded to form season 1, with season 2 launched on 19 August 2019.
This growing collection of rapid impact podcasts is shortly to be available nationally to all nursing staff, and there are now plans for the podcasts to expand into other specialties and focus on wider nursing issues, including staff resilience and the rise of nurse-led services within the NHS.
