BSH are currently collaborating with the American Society of Hematology on a project to improve neonatal sickle cell screening rates in sub Saharan Africa. As part of this project BSH will be supporting a team of three individuals with expertise in various aspects of sickle cell disease to undertake a one week scoping visit to Lusaka, Zambia in 2020 We are seeking expressions of interest from BSH members with the following expertise:
- Laboratory Scientist with experience in the diagnosis of haemoglobinopathies in neonates by IEF and HPLC. Experience in low and middle income countries, quality assurance systems and establishment of sickle screening programmes would be a great advantage.
- Paediatric haematologist or paediatrician with extensive experience in the management of neonates and children with sickle cell disease. Past or current experience in LMIC and establishment of sickle services and/ or peer review programmes would be of significant advantage.
This initial scoping visit will explore the potential for a longer term educational collaboration up-skilling laboratory personnel and clinicians in Zambia to improve care for sickle cell patients in Zambia.
