Artificial intelligence is to be introduced into England’s blood transfusion system to improve supply of products, it has been announced.

An automated machine learning platform will help the NHS to improve management of its complex blood supply chain - and lead to improved outcomes for patients, developers said.

NHS Blood and Transplant is working with an AI logistics company Kortical on the project, which is being funded by a £750,000 grant from Innovate UK.

Developers say they aim to test their work on the supply of platelets first of all.

NHSBT Medical and Research Director Gail Miflin said: “Blood is a precious resource and a vital part of treatment for many patients. Improvements to the supply chain will help to ensure that these blood components are available at the right time and in the right place and reduce potential wastage.”

The organisation’s Chief Digital Officer Aaron Powell added: “At NHSBT we strive to be leaders in innovation ensuring that patients are receiving the best care that modern technology can provide.”
