Our Global Haematology Scholarship provides financial support for those undertaking short-term UK-to-LMIC and LMIC-to-UK trips for educational purposes.
Other visits or work, including clinical work, research and leisure activities, are not covered under this scholarship.
Our support exclusively covers the educational goals stated in your application.
Our support will only cover flights, accommodation and subsistence. Please note: alcohol costs cannot be claimed as subsistence.
We will ask you to confirm the details of your flight and accommodation, which we will normally book and pay for on your behalf. If you would prefer to book your flights and accommodation yourself and claim back from BSH you can do so. Please note if book yourself and your claim is for more than £2,500 it can take up to 8 weeks for your reimbursement to be processed and funds paid into your nominated account.
Please read the instructions below before making any bookings.
Flights and accommodation.
If you would like to book your flights and/or accommodation yourself, you can do so. You will be able to claim for this, but please note the following:
- BSH will only cover flights on Economy or Economy plus class. If you book a flight in 1st or Business class, you will only be refunded for the Economy class flight for your journey showing on the day you make your claim.
- Claimants may stay in 3 or 4 star accommodation, according to local availability. If you choose to stay in more expensive accommodation, your refund will be capped at £190/night (Central London), or £120/night elsewhere.
- If you are sharing a room or apartment, you can only claim for your share. If your receipt is for two people, you should indicate clearly that you have halved the sum involved and are claiming for that on your claim form.
- BSH will only pay for your accommodation for the nights when you are on your placement. If you choose to extend your stay either before or after this, you must clearly show the dates when you are eligible to claim on your claim form. The maximum time for which you can claim subsistence is 6 weeks (42 nights).
- Refunds can take up to eight weeks to process.
Alternatively, BSH can book your flights and accommodation for you through our travel agent. You can search for either yourself and provide the information to be passed on to the travel agent, but please note:
- BSH needs at least three weeks’ notice to make the booking.
- Flight prices can change and we may not be able to secure the rate you have found through the agent.
- The travel agent does not use the platforms booking.com or AirBnB. If you find suitable accommodation with either of these, we will not be able to book it for you.
Subsistence
If you are travelling to the UK BSH can pay your subsistence in advance, at the rate of £45 per day, up to a maximum of 6 weeks. If your placement is shorter than this, you can only claim for the nights you are on the placement.
If you are travelling outside of the UK Subsistence will be provided on a per diem basis in line with the gov.uk recommended rates up to a maximum of six weeks.
You are responsible for complying with the highest standards of integrity in your work. If your work supported by our grant becomes subject to an investigation of scientific misconduct, you must inform us immediately, and we may then suspend funding. If academic fraud is found in the publication of your research supported by us, you must ensure that appropriate errata or restrictions are published.
You are fully responsible for the management, conduct and control of all research work funded by the grant.
We are not liable, except for death or personal injury arising from our negligence or our fraud, to any third party for any matter arising in connection with the work or travel funded by our grant and the publication of the results thereof.
You are responsible for ensuring any actions undertaken by you or those associated with your educational visit as part of the scholarship are compliant with the Charity Commission's safeguarding guidance, particularly regarding vulnerable adults or children.
We encourage the promotion of our organisation but you must obtain our explicit written consent each time you wish to make any statements about, or references in any documents or other medium to, our grant support or our organisation, or use our name and logo.
Your photo and a copy of your report may be published in our communications materials, including our website and social media platforms. We will proofread and make any minor grammar or spelling corrections as required. We will contact you for approval if edits beyond minor corrections are required. You may request we do not publish confidential information or withdraw your consent for publication at any time.
You are responsible for ensuring the information you supply as part of your application is correct and up-to-date. Should you provide fraudulent information, your application may be invalidated, and we may require that you return your funding.
You may be asked to present your work at BSH meetings, such as the Annual Scientific Meeting, to promote your research and the BSH grant programme.
